Seed Rice

BU Growers, Ltd. grows and processes its own seed. All fields are planted to roguing lanes with each field rogued four to six times. All seed fields are state certified and inspected. All of our seed is grown processed, and treated to turn out the highest quality product possible.

Cocodrie

Cocodrie, like one of its parents, Cypress, is a taller semidwarf that has excellent seedling vigor. It is similar to Gulfmont in maturity and is earlier than Cypress. It also has better blast resistance than Cypress or Gulfmont being more similar to Jefferson. Milling yield and sheath blight resistance of Cocodrie are similar to Gulfmont.

 Cheniere

Cheniere is a high yielding, early maturing, long grain rice variety developed at the LSU Ag Center Rice Research Station. It has a semidwarf plant type and is resistant to lodging. It is similar in height to Cocodrie and Cypress. It averaged 36 inches in height in yield tests in Louisiana compared with 36 and 37 inches for Cocodrie and Cypress, respectively. Maturity is similar to Cypress and five days later than Cocodrie. Days from emergence to 50% heading have averaged 87, 87, and 82 for Cheniere, Cypress, and Cocodrie, respectively. It is moderately susceptible to blast and sheath blight and resistant to straighthead. It has good yield potential and good milling quality and grain appearance.

Jefferson

Jefferson is a semidwarf variety that has superior lodging resistance and matures 1 to 2 weeks earlier than Gulfmont or Cypress. Its main crop yield is similar to the later season varieties Gulfmont and Cypress but its ratoon crop yield has been higher. Milling quality of Jefferson has been similar to Gulfmont but under very high temperatures during grainfill, its relatively large grain may have some chalk. Due to the larger seed size of Jefferson, it is recommended that seeding rates be increased to achieve adequate plant population stands. Jefferson has improved resistance to blast and sheath blight as compared to Lemont, Gulfmont, and Cypress.

 Francis

Francis is a very high yielding long grain variety released by The University of Arkansas in 2002. This variety is approximately 40 inches tall and has about the same maturity as Cocodrie. The University of Arkansas rates the following factors:          Sheath Blight – MS; Blast – S; Stem Rot – S; Kernel Smut – VS; False Smut – S; Brown Spot – R; Straight Head – MS; and Lodging – MS. Milling yield is comparable to Cocodrie with field yields on an average in excess of 53 barrels. Some yields in Arkansas have exceeded 63 barrels.

Cypress

Cypress was developed from a cross of L-202/Lemont and has superior seedling vigor as compared to most other semidwarf varieties. It has superior milling yield which remains stable even under low harvest moisture conditions. Cypress is somewhat taller and later than Lemont. It is moderately resistant to blast but very susceptible to sheath blight.

Saber

Saber is a conventional long grain cultivar released from the Texas program in 2001. It was developed from the cross Gulfmont/RU8703196/Teqing. It is a semi-dwarf cultivar similar in height to Cypress and similar to Gulfmont in maturity. Main crop yields of Saber are similar to Gulfmont, but ratoon crop yields have been superior. Milling quality has been the same as Cypress. Saber possesses improved resistance to blast that is comparable to Jefferson and improved resistance to sheath blight that is better than most commercial cultivars.

Clearfield 161

CL161 is an early semi-dwarf long grain variety that provides good yield potential and high tolerance to Newpath herbicide. It closely resembles Cypress in appearance, performance, and maturity. It has excellent seedling vigor and good standability. However, this variety can be susceptible to lodging if excessively fertilized. There is a limited amount of data available for CL161, but preliminary evaluations indicate susceptibility to sheath blight and blast, with moderate susceptibility to straight-head. Additional preliminary data suggests that milling yields and the potential for a second crop are very good.

Dixiebelle

Dixiebelle is a semidwarf long grain variety that has main and ratoon crop yields similar to or better than Gulfmont. It can be used as a conventional long grain rice but it also has a superior processing quality that is preferred by the parboil-canning industry. Dixiebelle has a maturity similar to Gulfmont and milling yield that is intermediate to Gulfmont and Cypress. It is somewhat more susceptible to blast and more resistant to sheath blight than Gulfmont or Cypress.
